REAL Skills Wraps Up!
The Provincial 4-H Council’s new REAL Skills Program, sponsored by Sears, wrapped up on November 16th, 2010 while the youth attended their last session at Johnston’s Tire & Automotive. The
youth who participated in the first ever REAL Skills Program have
completed several certificate granting courses, as well as learned
practical skills in Entrepreneurship and Marketing; Safe Food Handling;
WHMIS; First-Aid; Resume Writing/ Interview Skills; and Automotive Care
and Maintenance. These events were hosted by 4-H leaders, trained facilitators, and 4-H staff.
The goal of the REAL (Rural Employment and Life) Skills program was to
provide an opportunity for Island youth to learn practical skills to
help them prepare for employment. It was also an opportunity to provide
local businesses and organizations with the opportunity to partner with
4-H to provide training skills that are important for youth to acquire.
One
of the chaperones, a 4-H leader, said about the program “very
informative and interactive sessions”, another stated “it was a fun and
great learning program – I’m sure enjoyed by all”.
When
asked about their REAL Skills experiences, one 4-Her stated “the
program gave me a lot of useful skills”, another stated “the sessions
provided me with practical, valuable skills”. The general consensus was “this was Awesome!”
We would like to recognize and thank the facilitators from the following organizations who helped make this program possible: Innovation
PEI, PEI Department of Health and Wellness, C.P.R First Aid &
Safety Services, UPEI Career Services, and Johnson’s Tire and
Automotive. We would also like to thank our volunteer leaders who chaperoned the REAL Skills Sessions.

provide members the opportunity to do further exploring, practicing and
learning at their own pace and on their own time.
There are currently two copies available at the
Provincial 4-H Office, and by Christmas we will have two copies at each
of the District Officer Offices. Please feel free to borrow them.

Facebook: Be Social but BEWARE
Tips for 4-H Members and their Families
Facebook is a wonderful social networking tool; however,
you have to take speical precautions when using tit to be sure that you
are SAFE! Here is a safety checklist for you to see how "Facebook Safe"
you are!
- Don't give out your password to anyone!
- Make sure your "Profile Picture" is something you
would want others to see!
- No one really has 500 "friends"! Categorize your
facebookf riends (Account / Edit Friends / Create Different Lists / Use
the privacy settings to determine what each group of people can access
on your account)
- Never add people you don't know as a "friend".
- Use the privacy settings so that all anyone can see
on your profile is your picture and the option to send you a message or
add you as a friend.
- Things to block some people from seeing would be
your:
- Status
- Wall
- Pictures and Videos
- List of other friends
- Preview your profile so that you will know what
others can see!
- Delete your wall every once in a while that
"conversations" can't be followed for months afterwards!
- Be sure that anything youwrite to someone else is
something that you would sayto that persons face. Your words may come
back to haunt you!
REMEMBER!
- "Nice" is different that "good"
- You can't track who see your profile!
- Anyone can tagyour photos, allowing more than just
your "friends" to see them! Hide your photos and videos from everyone
except your "real" friends.

Rural Roots Run
Deep Fundraising Project
Canadian country music
star Gord Bamford has joined together with 4-H clubs across Canada to
provide an exciting, exclusive fundraising opportunity which will deepen
the rural connection in communities throughout the country.
The ”Rural Roots Run Deep Fundraising Project” provides 4-H Clubs the
opportunity to sell Gord’s new release “Day Job”(NOW Available) and his
current release,” Honkytonks and Heartaches” to help raise funds to assist
with club goals during the year.
This partnership will
help enhance the community by providing a learning opportunity to
advance leadership, communication and business skills for all 4-H
members and leaders that are involved.
Scenario
• Your club has 13 members;
• Your 4-H club wants to go on a tour, buy jackets, donate to a local
charity, host a clinic/ workshop, go to camp or provincial program etc
and they need extra funding to do so.
• If your club chooses to sell 26 CD’s (Please note; there is no minimum
order)
• THAT IS ONLY 2 CDS PER MEMBER (remember you have leaders in your club
as well)
• How many people don’t know 2 people that like to support 4-H and love
Canadian Country music while supporting local talent and Canadian
Country Music Artist, Gord Bamford.
Let’s do the Math:
4-H Purchases for $11.00 x 26
=$286.00
Suggested Retail for $20.00
$20.00 X 26 =$520.00
$520.00 - $286.00 cost
= $234.00 towards your clubs initiatives
It actually IS that simple,
because Gord doesn't want this to be tough for you guys.So think about
it. Think about selling some good music to make some good money to do
some GREAT 4-H stuff.

memorial scholarship from Outstanding Young Farmers
Ancaster, ON [April 19, 2010] - Nominations are

Memorial Scholarship for a young Canadian pursuing a post secondary education in agriculture. Started in 2009, the
$1,000 annual scholarship was established by the
late Martin Streef, recipient of both Ontario's

"In the first year, this new scholarship attracted
excellent nominations from across Canada, and we
look forward to even more participation for 2010,"
says Brian Newcombe, president of OYF Canada. "OYF is honoured to administer this scholarship on Martin's behalf, to recognize
young people that share the passion and the drive
he had for Canadian agriculture."
The OYF Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in the
fall. The first recipient, chosen in 2009 from 19
applications, was Robyn McCallum, a student at
Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, NS.

Kubota Canada will Invest $200,000 in
4-H Across Canada
Funding helps to support provincial
rallies for 4-H youth
OTTAWA, April 30, 2010- The Canadian 4-H Council is very pleased
with the investment that Kubota Canada Ltd. has made by sponsoring
provincial, regional and local 4-H beef and dairy shows across Canada
leading up to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, held each November in
Toronto.
In 2010, Kubota Canada is investing $200,000 with a high
percentage going directly to the local 4-H groups to be used as they see
fit. The balance will be used to supply banners and signage, volunteers
and prizing for the shows. This commitment is the second year that
Kubota Canada has provided support for 4-H in this way.
“We are extremely pleased to see this ongoing commitment from Kubota
Canada,” said Judy Shaw president of the Canadian 4-H Council. “Kubota
Canada has recognized the value of the 4-H program for Canadian youth.
It is support such as this that helps to make 4-H such a strong and
vibrant program.”
For Kubota, the investment is an excellent commitment to
the future of Canadian youth in agriculture.
“At Kubota Canada and at dealerships right across Canada, we are so
proud of our involvement with 4-H,” said Ross Wallace, General Manager,
Sales and Marketing for Kubota Canada. “We have been fortunate enough to
see the quality of the young people that are involved in 4-H, and we
knew immediately that we should be supporting the 4-H program in
Canada.”
Last year, Kubota Canada was involved in more than 65 4-H
beef and dairy shows across Canada. In 2010, they plan to enhance and
grow their commitment to the 4-H program.
“Our sponsorship philosophy has revolved around youth, education and
creating opportunities,” Wallace continued. “4-H is such a great fit,
and we are pleased to continue this ongoing relationship.”
Across Canada, more than 26,000 youth are involved in the 4-H program
and are trained by more than 8,500 volunteer leaders. 4-H has been
developing well-rounded Canadian youth for close to 100 years.

Judging Skills
Development Day
Who: ALL 4-H Members (livestock and non-livestock)
Where: Crapaud Agriplex
When: Monday, May 24, 2010
Why: The activity of judging exercises a member’s
decision-making and problem-solving skills as they determine the most
logical ranking. Judging participants learn to evaluate the desirable
and undesirable points in any given class, and learn to be detail
oriented in such evaluation. Another important component of the judging
activity is the members’ preparation and actual delivery of a set of
oral reasons. The oral reasons are the members' way to describe their
ranking and defend their thought processes and decisions. The reasons
are typically presented in a logical and professional manner. Oral
reasons allow participants to become more proficient in defending their
decisions using public speaking skills.
The skills developed through the evaluation process of
the judging activity can be utilized in real-life situations.
This will be an excellent workshop for members in ALL
projects. We strongly encourage ALL clubs to participate, and encourage
leaders to get in contact if they have specific expectations for the day
long event. More information will follow in the coming weeks.
As a nice primer for members, visit the resource available on the BC 4-H
Website: http://www.bc4h.bc.ca/Quizzes/index.html.
We have CD ROM copies, in the office for borrow upon request.

4-H trying to stay relevant

and Christine MacKinnon,
provincialpresident of 4-H. Guardian photo
The days of thinking of the 4-H movement as being a club for rural
kids is gone and, in fact, the newest club on P.E.I. — The Lucky
Clovers — has been formed in downtown Charlottetown.
Christine MacKinnon, provincial president of the organization,
said that “we are in a bit of a decline and look for members in new
places so we have a new club started right in downtown Charlottetown
called The Lucky Clovers that meets in the Murphy Community Centre.”
In an interview Saturday, she said “4-H is like every
other youth
organization on P.E.I., the numbers are declining especially in rural
areas because families are faced with decisions about how they spend
their time and their money and, to be honest, children these days have
an abundance of opportunities. 4-H used to be a way to get travel and
awards, but we have competition with school organization and children
now have a lot of wonderful opportunities.”
MacKinnon was attending the organization’s annual general meeting in
Cornwall. During the meeting, prizes were given to top members, clubs
and leaders. There are more than 600 4-H members along with more than
300 adult
leaders on the Island in clubs spanning the entire province, she said.
“It is the number one youth organization on the Island.”
She said that many people think of 4-H as an agriculture club and
indeed it does work to raise awareness of farming, “but we are looking
for new members in a whole lot of new places . . . and actually most of
our members don’t live on farms.”
She said people don’t have to be a farmer to be in 4-H “and many
of our projects are way beyond agriculture with projects in computers,
woodworking, outdoor adventure, cooking and many others.”
Because young people have so many choices these days “we have to
stay relevant for our young people and we have a really exciting local
food project that we are getting started that looks at local food, how
it’s grown, how it’s produced, how it’s cooked and served so we try to
keep it interesting and fresh for our young people.”
The 4-H movement has been going strong on Prince Edward Island for
90 years and is approaching its centenary in Canada. Since it began,
MacKinnon said, more than two million people have been members
nationally.
She is interested to see the numbers for Prince Edward Island.
She explained “the name 4-H comes from our pledge — we pledge our
head to clear our thinking, our heart to greater loyalty, our hands to
larger service and our health to better living for our club, community
and country.”
