New Brunswick 4-H has invited PEI 4-H Members to join them on their annual Canoe Trip of the Kennebecasis River. Please review the information in the NB Canoe Trip Information and Application Kit.
A Chaperone would be needed to go from PEI. If there are interested members, PEI 4-H can help find a screened chaperone, but all other travel and requirements must be arranged by the member and family.
This looks like an exciting trip (June 23/24) and I hope you will take advantage of it!
----------
Attention Senior 4-H Members :
Do you love 4-H? Do you want to find out more about 4-H across Canada? Do you want to learn more about volunteer boards and committees? Do you want to ensure 4-H is still an awesome program for youth years from now?
If you have experienced the value of the 4-H program in your life, and you want to play a role in its future, then consider applying to be the PEI 4-H representative on the Youth Advisory Committee.
The Youth Advisory Committee, or YAC, is a National committee created in 2005 to ensure that 4-H members had a voice that would be heard by the powers that be at the Canadian 4-H Council. While the roles may continue to evolve as the YAC mandate is clarified with time and experience, YAC members must commit to:
• 4-5 YAC conference calls per year
• Must sit on 2 National Working Groups (i.e. National Conference, eHistory, Citizenship Seminar), each of which would consist of 2-4 conference calls per year.
• A face to face meeting at the Canadian 4-H Council AGM in late May/early June of each year (location varies, Manitoba in 2013).
• Varying levels of preparation for each meeting.
• Contribution to the Canadian 4-H Council blog
• Represent a youth voice at National meetings, and represent a national voice at local provincial programs and events.
In speaking with Matthew Tweedy, current chair of YAC, you would be looking at 6-8 hours of YAC participation per month, and would commit to it for three years. While this is a National Committee, we encourage our YAC representative to engage in Provincial programming, and invite them to join the PEI 4-H Council Board of Directors at meetings, which would lead to more hours.
REGULATIONS
1. The applicant must have been in 4-H at least two years
2. The applicant must have met all of the 4-H Year Completion Requirements in the previous year
3. The applicant must be an active 4-H member when she/he is serving as the PEI YAC representative. If the
4-H member graduates out of the 4-H program within their three year term on YAC, then is preferred that they are screened as a 4-H leader.
4. The applicant must be 17-21 years of age.
5. The applicant must commit to a three year term.
SELECTION PROCESS
1. YAC Member Application
2. Interview
3. 5-7 minutes presentation at interview, on your vision of the future of 4-H.
If this position and opportunity is one that appeals to you, please fill out and submit the application no later than April 13.

The “Charlie Goodwin Top Horse & Pony Member Award” was won by Rebecca MacSwain of the Morell 4-H Club. Rebecca has been a 4-H member for six years. Her leader recommendation states, “she is a responsible, outgoing, dependable teenager. She has held several executive positions, currently treasurer of her club. She helped teach the first year horse & pony members, a responsibility she took very seriously.” This was the first year for this award, which is selected by combining the scores from an interview by a panel of judges and a written quiz about stable management.
Alyssa Hardy of the Lot 16 4-H Club received the Callbeck’s Home Building Centre Top 4-H Member of the Year Award. Alyssa has been a member for eleven years. During the 2010 - 2011 4-H year, she completed the Horse & Pony and Self-Determined Projects, as well as being President of her Club. Her leader recommendation reads, “She is a very enthusiastic member, who is dedicated to the 4-H program. As club president this past year, she has shown herself as a caring, capable and confident role model for all members and leaders.”
The “Women’s Institute Agriculture Awareness Project Award” is to instill in 4-H members and the community the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives. Prize money was awarded to the following 4-H clubs: 1st place - Abany Centennial 4-H Club; 2nd place - Millview Vernon River 4-H Club. A food experience isn’t just any old pizza party, it’s when a group of members and leaders get together to make the pizza. It’s about experiencing the food, not just eating it.

Success at Canadian Western Agribition for PEI 4-H Member
PEI 4-H member Patrick Holland of Montague has just returned home from a very successful trip to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he participated in the Canadian National 4-H & Youth Judging Competition, November 20 – 21, as a member of the Maritime 4-H Team.
Patrick was selected to represent PEI after he won the PEI 4-H Judging Competition at Old Home Week this past August. At the National Competition he won a very impressive third place out of 59 participants from across Canada, the US and the UK. For his third place finish he was awarded with a $750 John Deer Scholarship and a belt buckle.
The first place competitor was Gail Verleysen (Alberta 4-H) and the second placing went to Megan Kemp (Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up Team). The overall team award was won by Alberta 4-H. The other members of the Maritime 4-H Team were Ashley Black of New Brunswick and David Siddall of Nova Scotia.
Competition was tight as 4-H delegates judged 12 classes of livestock including: light horse, swine, milking cows, dairy calves, and various beef classes. Delegates had to give oral reasons on eight of the twelve classes.
This is the second year in a row that a PEI 4-H member has won the third place spot at this event, with Morgan Ings or China Point also receiving this honor last year.
Patrick had the following to say about his experience at Agribition: “I had a lot of fun and it was a great learning experience. The quality of competitors and livestock was remarkable. I'm thankful for the opportunity that 4H has given me and I would encourage anyone in 4H to try their hand at judging.”

PEI ADL 4-H Dairy Team Royal
[Charlottetown PE, November 2011] –The PEI ADL 4-H Dairy Team has returned home from a successful trip to the 32st Annual Canadian 4-H Classic Junior Dairy Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
Being able to attend national competitions is largely possible because of the support from organizations such as team sponsor, Amalgamated Dairies Limited, and other Island businesses. 2011 marks the 24th year of 4-H involvement in the Classic.
Team member Matthew Tweedy had this to say about his experience at the Royal, “It provides a priceless opportunity to meet youth from across the country that are involved in the dairy industry and have similar interests. Meeting these people enables us to learn new things about showing and offers insight into how dairy farms are operated across the country.”
The ‘All Holstein’ Dairy Team did very well in the ring for conformation with four top-ten finishes.
The Intermediate Heifer Class saw a seventh place finish for Connor Man (Pleasant Valley 4-H Club) with his calf, Crasdale Atwood Susie.
In the Senior Heifer Class Alex Bernard of the Evangeline 4-H Club placed third with his calf, Brackleyfarm Chelios Cheerio, and in the same class Kyle Bouma of the Pleasant Valley 4-H Club placed 15th with his calf, Weeksdale Gold Real Deal.
James Murphy of the Pleasant Valley 4-H Club placed eight in the Summer Yearling Class with his heifer, Cousinsvale Attic Shine. In the Junior Yearling Class Kyle Vanderkloet of the Dunstaffnage-Marshfield 4-H Club placed 5th with his heifer, Eastside Stella Artois.
In the group of three calves PEI placed 4th.
Other members of the Dairy Team who participated at the Royal are Kelsey Haslam (Pleasant Valley 4-H Club), and Matthew and Christiana Tweedy (Cherrycliffe 4-H Club). Chaperones for the trip were Marlene Mann and Jason Bouma.
A big thanks goes out to the sponsor of this year's 4-H Dairy Team:

Having attended the Royal Winter Fair 4 times, with this year being my last, it was a good feeling to be able to pass along my knowledge to the 1st time members.” Being able to attend national competitions is largely possible because of gracious contributions from local businesses such as Cavendish Agri Services.
Emily McKenna-Ayles made it to the semifinals of the Junior Showmanship Class and Patrick Holland advanced to the finals in the Intermediate Showmanship Division. Kyle Younker advanced to the finals in the Senior Showmanship Division and earned Honorable Mention (3rd place overall). The results for the conformation classes for each breed are as follows:
