Islanders Fair Well at EBI Showcase!

The annual Eastern Breeders Inc. Showcase, held in Truro NS, June 27 – 29, was a great success as 73 Maritime 4-H members gathered at Nova Scotia Agricultural College for an intense three day workshop.  The PEI delegation consisted of 12 Dairy members and 6 Beef members.

PEI 4-H members showed great strength in both showmanship and conformation classes at this year’s competition with the Overall Aggregate Award for Beef going to Brady Matheson, Grand River East 4-H Club.  Adam MacKinnon, of Lot 16 4-H Club claimed Reserve Overall Aggregate for Dairy.

Other PEI highlights of the showcase include: Top Quiz for Beef, Patrick Holland of Summerville

4-H Club; Jackpot winner for Beef, Justin Ford of North River 4-H Club; Jackpot winner for Dairy, Joel Jewell of North River 4-H Club.

The members were instructed by some of the best national beef and dairy cattle experts in the country and participated in many “hands on” information sessions.  Some of the educational sessions included topics such as Genetics, Animal Husbandry, and Embryo Transplants.

Members were very impressed with the high calibre of fitting, showing and training sessions available to them.  4-H members have often noted that their success in the show ring is directly related to the many valuable skills acquired at the Eastern Breeders Inc. Showcase.

Green is the OUR Colour

At PEI 4-H we enjoy being green both literally and figuratively. that's why we're encouraging lots of new environmentally friendly activities! Here's 5 tricks to make your everyday activities a little more eco-friendly!

  • Carpool to your meetings! This saves gas, carbon emissions, money and is a good excuse to socialize! Walking or bike riding are equally good choices.
  • Bring your own water bottle to meetings. North American plastic bottle production uses the same amount of oil as 110, 000 cars (Check out the image below . . . it's mindblowing!!!)
  • Use recycling as a fundraiser. It's as old as the ages, but garage sales and bottle drives keep things out of our land fills and provide some money to the club.
  • Wear vintage clothes. Not only are they cool, they're cheaper and a great way to recycle fashion
  • Turn off the lights! Not just when your meetings are over, but when you leave a room at home. It also helps to unplug any appliances that you aren't using and prevent 'phantom' electricity waste!

Let us know what YOU'RE doing - personanly, or with your club - to dream green on the PEI 4-H Facebook Page, and we'll put it in The Link, and send you a 'Dream Green' shopping bag!!!!

Welcome to the New Member of the 4-H Team in West Prince / Summerside District
Introducing
Jacqueline Stewart

Hello Island 4-Her’s,

I am really excited to be part of the 4-H team with my new position as District Officer for the West Prince Region. I don’t officially start my new position until June 16th but I have been attending some district meetings and learning the ropes.
I have been married for the past 4 years to my wonderful husband Sandy and we have a two year old chocolate lab named Ty and a spoiled cat, Izzy. I grew up on a small cattle and potato farm just outside O’Leary. I also enjoy riding and have raced competitively since the age of 10.
4-H has been a big part of my life and some of the most fun years of my youth. I took part in a Horse and Pony Club foreight years and participated in many Communications Nights, Achievements Days, Conferences and was fortunate enough to travel to Newfoundland with a Young Forester’s Program. 4-H
instilled in me the importance of community, family and friends. Today I am an active volunteer in my community and surrounding communities. I enjoy coaching minor hockey and assisting with planning events and fundraisers.
I will be based out of Access PEI in O’Leary and my office doors will always be open. I look forward to meeting everyone and am always open for suggestions and feedback. When I get settled in O’Leary I will get my contact information out to everyone. Until then if I pass you on the street come on over, I’d love to meet you.

Yours in 4-H,
Jackie Stewart
