Success at Canadian Western Agribition for PEI 4-H Member
PEI 4-H member Patrick Holland of Montague has just returned home from a very successful trip to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he participated in the Canadian National 4-H & Youth Judging Competition, November 20 – 21, as a member of the Maritime 4-H Team.
Patrick was selected to represent PEI after he won the PEI 4-H Judging Competition at Old Home Week this past August. At the National Competition he won a very impressive third place out of 59 participants from across Canada, the US and the UK. For his third place finish he was awarded with a $750 John Deer Scholarship and a belt buckle.
The first place competitor was Gail Verleysen (Alberta 4-H) and the second placing went to Megan Kemp (Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up Team). The overall team award was won by Alberta 4-H. The other members of the Maritime 4-H Team were Ashley Black of New Brunswick and David Siddall of Nova Scotia.
Competition was tight as 4-H delegates judged 12 classes of livestock including: light horse, swine, milking cows, dairy calves, and various beef classes. Delegates had to give oral reasons on eight of the twelve classes.
This is the second year in a row that a PEI 4-H member has won the third place spot at this event, with Morgan Ings or China Point also receiving this honor last year.
Patrick had the following to say about his experience at Agribition: “I had a lot of fun and it was a great learning experience. The quality of competitors and livestock was remarkable. I'm thankful for the opportunity that 4H has given me and I would encourage anyone in 4H to try their hand at judging.”

PEI ADL 4-H Dairy Team Royal
[Charlottetown PE, November 2011] –The PEI ADL 4-H Dairy Team has returned home from a successful trip to the 32st Annual Canadian 4-H Classic Junior Dairy Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
Being able to attend national competitions is largely possible because of the support from organizations such as team sponsor, Amalgamated Dairies Limited, and other Island businesses. 2011 marks the 24th year of 4-H involvement in the Classic.
Team member Matthew Tweedy had this to say about his experience at the Royal, “It provides a priceless opportunity to meet youth from across the country that are involved in the dairy industry and have similar interests. Meeting these people enables us to learn new things about showing and offers insight into how dairy farms are operated across the country.”
The ‘All Holstein’ Dairy Team did very well in the ring for conformation with four top-ten finishes.
The Intermediate Heifer Class saw a seventh place finish for Connor Man (Pleasant Valley 4-H Club) with his calf, Crasdale Atwood Susie.
In the Senior Heifer Class Alex Bernard of the Evangeline 4-H Club placed third with his calf, Brackleyfarm Chelios Cheerio, and in the same class Kyle Bouma of the Pleasant Valley 4-H Club placed 15th with his calf, Weeksdale Gold Real Deal.
James Murphy of the Pleasant Valley 4-H Club placed eight in the Summer Yearling Class with his heifer, Cousinsvale Attic Shine. In the Junior Yearling Class Kyle Vanderkloet of the Dunstaffnage-Marshfield 4-H Club placed 5th with his heifer, Eastside Stella Artois.
In the group of three calves PEI placed 4th.
Other members of the Dairy Team who participated at the Royal are Kelsey Haslam (Pleasant Valley 4-H Club), and Matthew and Christiana Tweedy (Cherrycliffe 4-H Club). Chaperones for the trip were Marlene Mann and Jason Bouma.
A big thanks goes out to the sponsor of this year's 4-H Dairy Team:

PEI’s Cavendish Agri Services 4-H Beef Team has good showing at the Royal
[Charlottetown PE, November 2011] – PEI’s Cavendish Agri Services 4-H Beef Team has returned home from a successful trip to the 2011 Canadian Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Team member Ellen Dixon reported, “Being a senior, attending 'The Royal' doesn't get old. Having attended the Royal Winter Fair 4 times, with this year being my last, it was a good feeling to be able to pass along my knowledge to the 1st time members.” Being able to attend national competitions is largely possible because of gracious contributions from local businesses such as Cavendish Agri Services.
Emily McKenna-Ayles made it to the semifinals of the Junior Showmanship Class and Patrick Holland advanced to the finals in the Intermediate Showmanship Division. Kyle Younker advanced to the finals in the Senior Showmanship Division and earned Honorable Mention (3rd place overall). The results for the conformation classes for each breed are as follows:
· Emily McKenna-Ayles with her Shorthorn heifer calf, Evergreen Lady's Princess 1Y earned 4th place.
· Courtney Hogan with her Shorthorn yearling, Evergreen Ruby's Ava 8X, earned 5th place
· Emily Johnston with her commercial yearling, Lily, earned 5th place

· Kyle Younker with his Angus yearling, Northern View Colleen 11K, earned 10th place
· Matthias Drake with his Angus yearling, Bannockburn Valley Bridge 18X, earned 3rd place
The ten PEI 4-H members who were part of this year’s team were very grateful for the support of their sponsors; they wish to extend a huge thanks to Cavendish Agri Services, Green Diamond Equipment Ltd., Phillip’s Feed, Easter Beef Assoc., Atlantic Beef Products, Kensington Metal, Kensington Co-op, and Kensington Agricultural Services, as well as the PEI 4-H Council for making this opportunity possible. A special thank you goes out to young 4-H beef member Jake Matheson who raised $700 for the team by auctioning his hair at the Maritime Fall Fair! Jake was not old enough to compete at the Royal himself this year, but that didn’t stop him from supporting his local beef team. They would also like to thank their chaperones Andrew and Phyllis Dixon.

Livestock Project Meetings
Each month this fall and winter we will be hosting a short meeting to talk about one or two of the livestock projects that are currently offered by PEI 4-H. These meetings will be short (one hour) and informal. They will have several purposes:
· To inform leaders (or potential leaders) of the requirements of the project
· To get feedback about the project
· To share ideas for improving the project
· To meet and network with other leaders teaching the same project
The meetings are targeted towards project leaders but we encourage senior members to participate as well. We will not necessarily be making any changes to the livestock projects in the very near future; these sessions are meant to give the 4-H staff and Council an idea of how the projects are working for leaders across the island and to gauge need for improvement. Location will be room 236 of the Royalty Centre (next door to the 4-H office).
For more information contact Jackie, 902-368-4834, jlharlow@gov.pe.ca.

In recognition of the importance of forests to the health and well being of society, the P.E.I. Model Forest Network Partnership (PEIMFNP) and the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry will be conducting a photo workshop and contest, titled "What do the Forests Mean to Me". We would like to encourage people to head outside and capture special moments spent enjoying our forests and submit photos for a chance to win great prizes.
"The value of P.E.I. forests cannot be overlooked", said Richard Gill, PEIMFNP chair "Whether enjoying wildlife, walking, hunting, snowshoeing, biking or working, we must recognize the importance of this resource, including the economic, social, recreational, cultural, and aesthetic values".
The workshop and contest is designed to promote awareness of and appreciation for all types of forests, urban and rural, public and privately owned, across the island.
We are interested in receiving photographs of anything that is interesting and forest related.
