If you answered yes to both of those questions, 4-H has what you need! The REAL Skills Program is designed to provide youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with Rural Employment And Life Skills. You will be presented with the opportunity to learn practical skills that will help you prepare for employment by building up your experiences in:
Automotive Care and Maintenance
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Entrepreneurship / Marketing
Resume Writing and Interview Skills
Safe Food Handling, and
First - Aid
With the skills acquired in these sessions, you will gain insight into different occupations to help you determine what your specific interests and strong points are. With this knowledge, you will be one step closer to being desirable to prospective employers. Here’s what you will be learning:
Automotive Care and Maintenance
In this session you will learn the basics to proper car maintenance, from learning how to get the best mileage out of a tank of gas to being able to distinguish between the main parts of an engine. It is important to know more than how to drive your car. With this class, you will leave with the know-how of safety while operating a motor vehicle and how to recognize and fix a problem on the spot!
WHMIS
Safety is the number one priority within the workplace. Here you will learn proper work safety, how to recognize hazard alerts and symbols, and what to do in certain situations. Participants will be awarded with a certificate at the end of the session.
Entrepreneurship/Marketing
Learn to think “outside the box” and how to become your own boss! This session will teach you the fundamentals of starting a business and how to go about it. You will learn about the basics of accounting and marketing, the importance of forecasting sales, and how to determine the demand of consumers. You will even get to design a business plan in class!
Resume Writing/Interview Skills
What better way to impress a potential employer than having an impressive resume and a professional attitude? With this session you will learn the know-how of proper interview etiquette and how to enhance your resume, making yourself stand out amongst others. You can even put the skills you learn in this program on your resume! If you currently have a resume, bring it with you; if you do not, you will by the time you leave this session.
Safe Food Handling
This is an important skill to acquire. Here you will learn the proper ways to handle food, how to cook it properly, and the correct cleaning methods. You may even get to prepare your own snacks during this session! This is something you don’t want to miss, guaranteed.
First-Aid
Become a certified First-Aid attendant. You will be taught about First-Aid Emergency, what to do when presented with certain situations, and how to handle them properly. This is a very important skill to have, so you don’t want to miss out on this one!
Mission
It is our goal to increase membership in the 14 to 21 age range with a program that takes place within a shorter time-frame. Each of the sessions presented in the REAL Skills Program are designed to be an interactive and fun way to learn. Project Completion Requirements
To receive a 4-H Certificate of Achievement, the 4-H member must:

Participate in at least 5 of the 6 sessions, 3 of which must be WHMIS, Safe Food Handling, and First-Aid*.

Complete in-class activities to be kept in your REAL Skills portfolio.

Updated resume following the completion of the workshop.
*If member has completed First-Aid in the past 12 months, they may be exempt from this workshop, though it is highly reccommended to attend.

Youth participants in REAL Skills are asked to bring writing materials (paper and pencils/pens) with them to each session.
New members are invited and encouraged to join 4-H. In addition to the requirements of this project, new members would join with an existing 4-H club in their area, and complete the other three skill building requirements of every 4-H member’s year: a communications project, a community service project, and an agricultural awareness project.
