Council Activities
Agricultural Tours - Members, Leaders and their Families enjoy agricultural awareness tours to local sites of interest. These educational tours expose non-farm families to the agricultural businesses in our local area. Recent tour sites included a trips to Vanco Farms to view the tulip operation, to a large local dairy farm, and to harvest time at a commercial cranberry bog to mention a few.
Fun Times - Fun trips like downhill skiing and cross country skiing providea fun recreational activity that members can try or use to improve their skill levels. Getting active and having fun is very important. Winter horse and wagon rides and a trip to the movies provided a fun family activity in mid winter. 4-H have sponsored free community skates and invite all ages to join in the fun.
Workshops - Members enjoy learning at project workshops like the beef workshop and the rabbit clinic. These provide an opportunity for hands on learning and a chance to interact with members and leaders from other clubs. Workshops are great for sharing information and developing skills.
Exhibitions - Support from 4-H helps with local exhibitions. Providing rosettes and displays keeps 4-H visible at all our agricultural exhibitions. Members showcase their projects for the general public. It is a great way to introduce new families to the 4-H program. And members enjoy the prize ribbons and cash that exhibitions provide.
New and Interesting Projects - When there are members interested and resource leaders available, there are opportunities to have creative projects like:
-
The Challenge Project - members 14 and up from various clubs who plan their own activities from beginning to end.
-
Plowing Project - members learn the skills needed to operate a tractor and plow and then will compete in the local plowing match competition.
-
Welding Project - members develop basic welding skills and demonstrate what they have learned by displaying their welding project item.
Member and Leader Travel - Ten members plus a chaperone leader traveled to Alberta in 2008 as part of the 4-H Youth Exchanges Canada Program. This program provides for travel between the two exchange groups and the members and their families fund-raise to pay for various hosting activities. Members from this District are also involved in this program for 2009.
Leaders from the Souris District traveled to the Nova Scotia 4-H Pro Show. This was a great opportunity to see first-hand how their 4-H Show is organized and to bring back ideas for our Island Rural Youth Fair. The PEI 4-H Trust assisted with the travel expenses for this excursion.
